Health Analytics and Automation Internship

Role: Intern, Health Analytics and Automation team, Analytics and Data Science directorate at UKHSA

Overview: Our team leads on implementing a culture of best practice and innovation in data science. We build knowledge sharing networks with teams within and outside of UKHSA via research, incident response, and product development, as well as identifying new data and analytical techniques that can be incorporated into our products. We utilize a range of tools including generative artificial intelligence, reproducible analytics pipelines, modelling, and Shiny dashboards.

Projects:

Climate Change Impact on Health Inequalities: Modeling the impact of climate change on health inequalities in England using statistical modeling, clinical, and earth observation data (R programming).
Avian Influenza Virus Exposure Risk: Investigating analytical approaches and new data sources to understand AIV exposure risk to humans and strengthen AIV surveillance for public health (R programming).
Automating Analysis of Free Text Data: Using Large Language Models to automate the analysis of free text answers from public health surveys to understand issues of stigma and discrimination for people living with HIV (Python).
Winter Pressure Dashboard: Developing an R Shiny dashboard for indicators of incidence and healthcare pressure of respiratory viruses for winter pressure planning (R programming).
Hospital Episodes Statistics (HES) Dashboard: Using HES data to quantify hospital admissions associated with infectious diseases, resulting in an interactive R Shiny dashboard for detailed exploration of HES data linked to relevant disease codes (R programming).
